Schools and govts should work together to 'offer the very best' to students

NSW Teachers Federation President Angelo Gavrielatos says the situation between the federal and state governments over the recommencement of the school term is “quite perplexing”. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has urged parents and teachers to work together to ensure schools remain open during the pandemic, however, state premiers have expressed otherwise with Victoria beginning term two on Wednesday online. The prime minister said keeping schools open only for those children of frontline workers was more like “child minding," not education. Mr Gavrielatos told Sky News “the main concern is the health and safety of everyone during this pandemic” and "schools are not only places attended by students". He said schools would be working with governments to “ensure we can offer the very best we can to students within this pandemic”. “Right now though in NSW it is school vacation time and the most important thing is for our teachers and principles who have turned themselves inside out to have a well-earned rest,” he said. “When those restrictions are lifted, at that point in time we will continue our constructive engagement with NSW premier, her minister and the government at large to seek to transition in an orderly way back to something resembling normal in our schools. “It has got to be a staged transition, a staged return in order for us to manage the return of kids in these very difficult times.” Image: Getty
